The team has been gathering material for North - Eastern Christian Academy, a school in Yendi for some time now. They receive donations from all over Southern Illinois, Missouri and other places, sort through, package and ship them to Yendi. The team started planning a trip to the school a year ago and finally made it on June 7th, 2009. The team of five includes Chris, Tricia, Kayla, Jayme and Lora who were then joined by two young ladies currently living and working in Accra, Liz and Becky. Upon their arrival to the school on June 8th they immediately started working on meeting the children and teachers, and finding their way around the school. They also took a trip to pray over the property where the new school will be built. They ended the first day with a workshop for the teachers to introduce themselves and to understand what each staff member expects to gain from the training.

Their week has been spent teaching new programs in the classes, conducting workshops after school with the teachers, as well as organizing the shipments they had already sent over. The classes and the teachers have been very open to accepting the new programs; and everyone seems to be working together well.

Encouraging children to develop the habit of reading was a vital point which the team made passionate emphasis on. A 35 week curriculum of Daily Phonemic Awareness Lesson Plans Developed on a Systematic Scope and Sequence of Skills with explicit Modeling by Michael Heggerty was introduced to the school. This has strengthened the skills of teachers to be able to give a strong reading foundation to the children at the pre-school and kindergarten levels.

As a Christian school, the word of God is sewn in to the little children from both Muslim and Pagan homes. Remember that it is our duty to sow and God’s to nurture. Each morning the children recite the Lord’s Prayer and pledge allegiance to the Bible and the Christian flag. They are also thought to memorize Bible verses throughout the week.

Coming to Yendi to see the school and the children has already changed our perspective of the needs of the school and what shipment to send as soon as we get to the states This was a statement which touched the heart of the principal of the school so much that he thinks it should be a testimony to the whole world. Do you have anything to offer to God? Remember that how long one stays on earth does not matter to God but what impact one makes whiles on earth is what matters to God. With the kind of dedication shown by the entire school and churches all over the world it will not be long before it will be one of the highest sought out schools with the highest standard of education in Africa.

ON GOING PROJECT

The need for a spacious School block has become obvious as NECA is expanding to Junior High in September. The foundation of this uncompleted structure was constructed from a collection that was made by students of Holy Nativity Episcopal School in Florida, USA. This uncompleted structure is a testimony of what God has done through Rebecca Brunner and her students in May 2009. NECA will also use this medium to thank Liz and Becky Burt for the 1500 Ghana cedis donation they made towards this building on their recent visit to the school.

NEEDS

  • NECA needs 2000 dollars to roof, 1000 dollars for doors and louvers and 2000 dollars for classroom furniture before September 2009.

Also, the school will appreciate churches, missionaries, persons or group of persons who are willing to:

  • Contribute 50 dollars a month to give scholarship to needy children,

  • Contribute towards teacher development programmes.

  • Collect sort, package and ship school supplies to us.

  • Come and teach as volunteers for a year or more
